The northernmost region of the country covers the Pacific coast from the border with Nicaragua to Punta Cerritos, 22 km. west of the city of Santa Cruz, and includes 100 km. of Pacific coastline. In the past, this region’s economy has been
oriented toward cattle and agriculture. Today, however, the incomparable picturesque scenery, ranging from dry tropical forest to low mountain forest, it’s hot climate, as well as fertile natural landscape, have made Guanacaste one of the most visited tourism destinations by local and international visitors. Tourism in Guanacaste received a tremendous boost from the Gulf of Papagayo Tourism Development Project, as well as the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia, where many charter and regularly scheduled flights from the United States arrive.
